Implementation of U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement Will Create Jobs, Boost Economy, Ros-Lehtinen Says

Tuesday, May 15, 2012

(WASHINGTON) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, praised today’s full implementation of the U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

“At the stroke of midnight, many U.S. exports became eligible to enter Colombia duty-free, giving American businesses a much needed boost in revenue. Estimates suggest the trade agreement will create $1.1 billion in new revenue and generate thousands of new jobs in the United States, including more than 6,000 in Florida.

“This agreement is long overdue. Colombia has been an important democratic partner of the United States in the region, working hand-in-hand with us to combat the threat of drug trafficking, narco-terrorism, and leftist guerillas. I am very pleased that the U.S. and Colombia were able to work together to reach this agreement to further our alliance, which will benefit the security and economic interests of both nations.”
