(WASHINGTON) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, will hold a press conference in Miami on Monday, June 15, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. in her District Office (4960 SW 72 Ave, Suite 208). Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

“With many lining up to engage the Castro regime, it is critical that we continue to shine a spotlight on the crimes of these two spies and what their actions mean for the United States.

“For nearly 30 years, Walter and Gwendolyn Myers were able to evade detection and pass our secrets along to the Castro regime. Who knows how many dictators have their hands on this information now.

“We must learn from this treachery.

“The U.S. cannot afford to be swayed by the empty promises, superficial changes or political rhetoric of the Cuban dictatorship. The Castro brothers always have been and continue to be a threat to our nation’s security interests and to the safety of the American people.

“I look forward to hosting this event and learning more about how we can better protect ourselves against these ongoing efforts to undermine our nation and our ideals.”

Note: Chris Simmons is a former Defense Intelligence Agency analyst and has been deeply involved in U.S. counterintelligence efforts against Cuba. Simmons played a key role in the identification, investigation, and debriefing of convicted Cuban spy Ana Belen Montes.

Background: Walter Kendall Myers, a former high-level State Department official, and his wife, Gwendolyn Steingraber Myers, were arrested last week and charged with conspiracy, being agents of a foreign government, and wire fraud.

(WASHINGTON) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, will deliver separate remarks tomorrow at events marking the 20th Anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre.  Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

“I am honored to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre with just a few of the many courageous individuals who stood against repression, stood for human rights and democracy, and stood with their fellow citizens yearning for a new day in China.

“Beijing wants the entire world to forget about the extraordinary events of June 1989.  But our memories of those who were lost, and of the hopes and ideals which they embodied, will never be extinguished.

“Today, China continues to deny its citizens the basic freedoms and rights which we all deserve, and which must never be revoked.  Our obligation is to stand with the brave dissidents who refuse to give up on the dream of Tiananmen until it is fully realized throughout China.”
