Hyde Named Chairman of

House International Relations Committee

(Washington)-U.S. Rep. Henry Hyde (R-IL) was named today by the House Republican Conference to chair the House International Relations Committee.  Hyde has been a member of the committee since 1982.  Text of a statement made by Hyde following his selection:

"I'm gratified by the trust my colleagues have placed in me.  This is a formidable challenge, and with the bipartisan help of committee members we can strengthen our nation's foreign policy.  I intend to rely heavily on the wisdom and experience of Chairman Benjamin A. Gilman (R-NY) and Rep. Doug Bereuter (R-NE) and other important voices on the committee whose insights will be immensely helpful."
